In a candlelit corner of a French brasserie in Old City, conversation flowed over scallop crudo and Wellfleet oysters. But when John suggested a second stop for ice cream, he was a little concerned that Rachael - with a social media campaign dedicated to her love of the stuff - only begrudgingly agreed. It was a perfect August night, after all, and sitting outside for a cone (pistachio for him and mint chip for her) allowed both of their personalities to shine through. When a late summer storm with torrential rain quickly rolled in, Rach and John huddled in a covered entryway like the climactic scene of a rom-com. It was at that moment they both knew…they were going to have to make awkward small talk for the next 9 minutes while waiting for Rachael’s Uber to arrive. Something kept both of them curious, however. Rachael admired the confidence in John’s reply of “absolutely not” when she claimed to be a better dancer. And John found cute the ease with which Rach would roll out phrases like “a dog’s age” when most would just say “forever”, or “the bomb-dot-com” instead of just “great.” Throughout ER trips for dogs and humans; vacations international and domestic; sharing a cramped apartment or enjoying their South Philly rowhouse; Rach and John have made each other laugh, supported each other, and of course found comfort in the love of a gentle Black Lab mix, Dallas. Almost 3 years exactly from that night in Old City, Rach and John are excited for all the friends and family they hold close to join them for another late summer night.
